There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus – formerly “juvenile diabetes” or “insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus” because insulin treatment is a necessary and it typically affects children. This type is characterized by a lack of insulin production in the pancreas.
  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus – formerly “non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus” or “adult-onset diabetes” as insulin is not a necessary treatment and it typically occurs later in life. Type 2 starts as cells become resistant to insulin. Without treatment, a lack of insulin production may also develop. The primary cause is excessive body weight and not enough exercise. This is the most common type of Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Gestational Diabetes – occurs when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop a high blood sugar level.

Physical therapy is an effective treatment for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. There are several scientific studies proving that regular physical activity in Type 2 patients is extremely beneficial for a healthy metabolism. This is also the natural process to regulate blood glucose levels and leads to the decreasing need for medications.

Exercise contributes to lowering blood glucose in two ways:

  1. Increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin which activates cells to use any insulin to take up glucose during and even after the exercise ends.
  2. Stimulating another mechanism that is not insulin dependent which takes up glucose regardless of the presence of available insulin.

Diabetes also unfortunately causes other serious medical issues. Diabetic Neuropathies can affect several areas of the body which require time and treatment to successfully recover. The most common form of Diabetic Neuropathy is known as a “diabetic foot”, and without treatment, the patient may have to consider amputation. Diabetic neuropathic issues can be prevented and treated with physical therapy.

The treatment will be provided in the privacy of the home of the patient and adapted to efficiently use the available space. Necessary equipment will be provided by the physical therapist. Using a personal gym or training room will also improve the treatment, if the patient has access to such facilities.

Treatments can be performed individually, in couples or even in small groups and can be offered as often as needed.
